Individual Project - Questions and Answers

Assignment Sheet:

Feedback on Individual Projects:
  • First thing I checked for was if the report was written for presentation to an executive.
  • Next, I looked for brief information about the company and for hints on the company's strategy
  • Then I assessed the proposed technology for fit to business
  • Then I assessed if the appropriate level of understanding about the technology was demonstrated in the proposal
  • Then I assessed the recommendation
  • Then I assessed the strength of appendices and references to support the conclusions

Please feel free to ask questions. Emails will be answered and posted here.

  • Hello Professor,

  • I have a few questions regarding the individual project.

  • 1. If I understood correctly, we are to assume that the current state of our fictitious company is in a particular condition that’s getting obsolete and not efficient, and then determine the upgrades necessary relating to one of the 10 proposed topics?

That is one valid approach. The other is to assume that things are going nicely but with new technology, several efficiencies will occur including a strategic advantage.
  • 2. Can we include information regarding more than one topic since often they may be linked in IT?

The scope of the project is normally limited to one topic. However, including how the new technology upgrade will communicate with the remaining legacy systems is perfectly aligned with the scope of the project.
  • 3. What length of pages should the report be (including the writing, graphs)?

The report is aimed at top executives who have little time. Make you points quickly (5 or less pages) but you may include appendices that support your argument.
  • 4. How many links to youtube.com videos and webinars supporting our individual project should we be posting, and should they be posted on the same discussion board as the one on the class wiki where we are expected to share 16 article links? Or should those links be kept private and included in the report?

I do not expect to see links to videos in the individual papers unless they are very tightly linked to your points. Think about the executive reading the report. Will she want to fire up a browser? This could kill her support due to the distraction. Project information that supports your points can also be postings on the wiki discussion page. However, the comments you will post on the wiki about the article should not be tied directly to your report.

  • Also, here’s a question about white papers: How many white paper reviews do we need to write, and should they be part of the 16 expected postings on the class wiki discussion board?

White papers are there for three purposes. 1. can serve as background for in class topic presentations. 2. as background for individual and group reports. 3. as material for discussion postings on the wiki site. It would also be helpful if in your research you find great on topic white papers that are not on the blackboard site if you post these as discussion topics with links so other students can benefit.
